Fanø Strikkefestival

Fan

FINALLY, something to report: I spent the weekend at the Fanø Strikkefestival, a knitting festival in Denmark with Loba, Tash and Mel.

The lovely Loba moved back to Copenhagen earlier this year and started preparing for our attendence at the strikkefestival some time in May. I finally got around to booking about two weeks ago.

Fanø is an island in the North Sea off the coast of southwestern Denmark, handily serviced by AirGobshite into Esbjerg.

Suprisingly (but also not) the landscape is quite similar to Norfolk -- wide expanses of beach. Even more surpisingly, the locals take advantage of this expanse by using it as a road.

Our bus drives along the beach:

One of the girls dubbed the village of Sønderho "Toy town" because of it's tiny twee-ness:

Being woefully deficient in Danish, we had to sit out all the workshops. Which left us with shopping. We sat outside the 'fish tent' (food venue, often fish but not exclusively) in the glorious sun! between shopping forays and drinking (dreadful) tea.

People-watching was an absolute delight: the woman were overwhelmingly middle-aged with short hair and sensibly shod. The men all had facial hair. The kidlets were all so cutely dressed. And dogs! So many little ones in baskets on the front of bikes, or large furry ones with nothing in between.

Top spot of the day was of a Karis. In Fanø! God, they're everywhere...

The Forsumlinghus (town hall) was the location of wallet carnage:

While sitting there, we were approached by a photographer, and then later a journalist from "Denmark's leading home journal". I guess it was a little odd to find three ex-pat australians at this little festival. And we've been promised a copy, so will let you know when it arrives.

Thanks to the lovely ladies for a fab weekend. Next year I promise to book earlier.

I trust you stood out by not being *too* sensibly shod

I lived in Denmark for a year (many many eons ago)- such a cool place - I could have come and translated for you (and helped with the wallet carnage) ;)

I was thinking about you this past weekend and wondering if you'd gone to Denmark. Sounds like a great trip. Did you find any good Danish yarn to add to your stash?

Was beginning to think you had fallen off the face of the earth... Denmark looks like a lovely place -- I think that if I didn't already live in the best place in the world, it's somewhere I would certainly consider.
