eurovision

Eurovision

Why don't we just scrap the songs and have a 'vote for your favourite country' show once a year. That way we could have lost the first 2 hours of the programme, watched Doctor Who and the final outcome of the vote would have been the same anyway.

- BBC's Have your say

I was so convinced that Sweden would win that Fred and I sarted discussing making the pilgrimage to Stockholm to attend.

Have a look at tell me what you think*.

* keep in mind that this is eurovision...

Niall, as always I look forward to your commentary.

I assumed it was more likely to be Ukraine, because it had Eastern Europe AND euro-vision weirdness going for it (though I loved Sweaden). The Serbia one was just dull, and I really can't understand how she won - people all over the continent gave it high points. Maybe it was the relgious vote? Apparently she said this morning 'it was god's will'...

I'm glad that was a quote, Pauline - I nearly asked you to have a good hard look at yourself. Phew.
My Eurovision wrap-up will be available soon - though I'm having a weird day. I think I just bought a flat

Surely you were planning a trip to France after their , ahem, wonderful performance with J P Gaultier outfits....

I was secretly pleased we didn't do anything. I went to school with a member of Scooch. Miserable girl.

I have to admit to only watching it for Terry these days. Although we were amused by the French DARING to have the English language in their song!

Sweden was robbed! I thought Ukraine would win, couldn't really see what the appeal of Serbia was, but there you go.

Sweden rocked! Wonderful, sub-T-rex rock/pop! Maybe next year.

Politically incorrect (and possibly factually incorrect*), I think the quote still sums up the ambivalent taste in the mouth left by the Serbian win for the traditional owners of Eurovision - ie men who like Sex and the City for the accessories.
The winner was neither camp nor good. It was gay, Jim, but not as we know it. It was fruit, but not of the orange kind. And it wasn't worth missing Doctor Who, another appararent big favourite with the traditional owners of Eurovision.

* the freedom of movement within the expanded EU means that Eurovision voting patterns are more likely determined by the movement of young people seeking better jobs, rather than traditional neighbourliness.
